| Fake Bills Popping Up in Area |
|
A rash of counterfeit bills has popped up in the area. DeKalb Police say two counterfeit $20 bills were used to pay for gas at the Road Ranger on North Annie Glidden late last month. Castle Bank last week reported finding two fake $20’s in a deposit from a gas station and another fake $20 in a deposit from a fast food restaurant. National Bank and Trust last week also reported receiving a fake $10 bill. Police say the counterfeits were made by washing $5 bills of their ink and then printing a higher domination on them. Markers can’t detect they’re counterfeit since real bill paper was used. The embedded strips in the bills still read “five” so the strips can be used to detect if the bills are fake. Crime Stopper is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information on the counterfeit bills. Callers can remain anonymous. The number is 815-895-3272.
