| Cohen Drops Out of Lt. Gov Race |
|
The Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor has dropped out of the race in the wake of accusations from a domestic battery arrest and his divorce that surfaced after his surprise win last week. Scott Lee Cohen made the announcement Sunday night, saying he was stepping aside for the good of the people of the state and the Democratic party. In the tearful announcement, Cohen said all he wanted to do was help people, not cause chaos. Cohen’s ex-girlfriend, who was later convicted of prostitution, accused him of holding a knife to her throat, but the domestic battery charges were dropped when she missed a court appearance. Cohen has also been accused of failing to pay child support and admitted to anabolic steroid use. Cohen dropped out the same day he met with Democratic Party Chairman and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who urged Cohen to step aside. The Democratic State Central Committee gets to pick a replacement for Cohen on the ballot. They’re scheduled to meet March 17th, but could meet sooner.
